Microsoft has only just released its Surface tablet, and it would seem that the Redmond-based company is also planning a Surface slate which doesn’t focus on media consumption with a side order of productivity – rather it will be all about gaming.
The rumoured Xbox Surface tablet has been mentioned before, and multiple sources have now spoken to the Verge and assured the tech site that the device is underway.
The speculation thus far is that this will be a 7 inch gaming tablet with a custom ARM processor and high bandwidth RAM suitable for pushing pixels around with smooth frame rates.
However, the ARM chip is far from confirmed, and indeed the Verge sources say that Microsoft may use an Intel chip instead.
Apparently the OS will be a custom Windows kernel, and the tablet will really be focused on gaming, although some other basic tablet tasks such as messaging will be possible with the device.
We wonder if it will come with an attached “controller cover” of some kind, rather than the keyboard cover which is bundled with the existing Surface.
We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more news on this one as and when it emerges.
