NEC develops 12-inch 3D screen

NEC Display Solutions, a subsidiary of Japan-based NEC Corporation and a manufacturer of computer monitors and large-screen public-information displays, is probably one of the world’s leading researchers on display technologies. Now, they have developed a 3D screen that works by displaying two different images, one for the left eye, one for the right.

The 12.1-inch LCD screen means 3-D image conscious fans throw away those red and green tinted glasses as they can watch 3D right with their naked eyes. These two different images displayed are simultaneously streamed onto the same screen, but the brain assembles the two sets of images and sees everything in three dimensions.

The screens are a scaled up version of 2.5-inch displays created by NEC in 2004. Mass production is slated to begin in fiscal 2009. This is another breakthrough in this field. Pretty soon, more and more monitors and televisions will become 3D enabled. A lot of sets now are boasting of 3D capabilities and with the advancement of this technology, it wouldn’t be too far when this feature becomes a standard on all sets.
