Can this be done. If not im running xp can i still transfer via a router (media center) or do i need to use crappy cd's

The latest XBox 360 dashboard update has a Music tab so I don't see why you can't store music on the XBox 360 HDD.

It possible to store music on there thats why i want to know if its possible to transfer via usb dongle

I should think so, the latest dashboard update (9199) supports USB devices if i'm not mistaken.

yeah but the xbox always tries to reformat the usb to put certain files onto it so it can read it. i think the usb update was more for game saves etc etc maps and profiles

Format the USB as FAT32 on your computer and it should function normal as a storage device in your 360 ..

I tried to transfer music from a usb stick to the xbox hard drive, but it only gives you the option to play the music and not to transfer it to the hard drive.

You can only play the music but you can't physically transfer it to the 360 hard drive. If you want go down that route your only option is Jtag 360 , then you can do about anything.
