Few questions thanks in advance for all the help.
I am currently connecting to the virgin media cable connection at home on a 2 Meg line through a Webster modem in the Bradford area. I routinely download loads of torrents, which tie my connection up. I have limited the bandwidth to the torrents client however my connection speed when trying to use the internet as well is far too slow on the home network. Due to this I want to improve my connection speed without paying more. I also have a splitter on the line feeding my eurovox box for my TV. What I ideally want is a faster connection to the net for my home network. From what I have read here already I believe it is possible to uncap my modem to connect at a better rate. Is this true with a webstar modem? I have found the DHCP for exe in the gmail drive however am still struggling to understand how it works. I don’t want to uncap the modem to the extreme so to be detected just an extra 2 meg would be great. The question is am I better putting a second modem onto the line to feed my torrents and downloads directly to that PC as it sits next to the line. Or do i try open my modems speed up a little. If so how do I do this? I see I need a MAC address from the local network. Is it possible to copy the other modems setting to do this? If not how best do I do this? Any help would be great. Cheers |

If you read through the haynes guide, it's all explained in there.
One thing to stress though is don't mess with your subscribed modem, you will get caught. Something else to consider, saturating the upload on a cable modem will adversely affect your download. Get an application like netlimiter and limit your upload of torrents to no more than 75% of your available upload. ie for 200kbit upload, limit your torrents to 150kbit or 18kbyte |

Hi,
Thanks for the information, I have read through the Hanes manual off the gmail drive. I will now add a second modem at home. I am going to buy one off ebay. Can anyone recommend one that is easy to mod without the need to solder any wires etc. I am looking at the Motorola SB4200 E is this my best option for the fastest speeds and ease of modding. Any suggestions for which modem to buy would be great. Cheers |

You only need the "e" modem if you are in an ex Cable & Wireless area, otherwise you need an "i" modem. Most of the early SB4100 and SB4200 modems can be unlocked easily without any soldering, however some of the later ones have locked firmware which may need some soldering.
You can buy hacked modems on ebay, just search for hackware - I've just sold one, should have another around Easter time if you're still looking then ![]() |

Thanks for that.
I will look for one off eBay. Out of interest is the Motorola SB4200 E a better investment long term for updating again should it needs it? I am in Bradford an ex telewest area do you have any idea what the maximum download rate is I should be looking for? I believe it is 10meg however have seen some posts claiming 20meg is about now. |

An "e" modem is EuroDOCSIS compliant and "i" is international DOCSIS, only Ex C&W uses EuroDOCSIS. I believe that Fibreware on the "e" modem with make it do both but can't say for certain.
AIUI, 20 meg is being trialled in some areas using the same config file as 10 meg. |

Hello all,
I am a bit confused. I have read aome of the posts and docs and I am puzzled that noone has a subbed modem like mine, i.e Webstar DPX100. Is this a rebadged or cloned modem of some kind? I was thinking of getting modded modem but not quite sure which one I need, I am with Virgin and formerly telepest. |
