Default Need advise on Spiderbox - newbie

Hi,

My uncle just got me a Spiderbox, but I see no forum on this receiver.
Is it not as good as a Technomate?
Please advise.
I am a newbie at all this techie stuff.

I use one and have no problems with it at all,..it has a fairly sensitive tuner but no doubt there are better receivers it's certainly better than my Technomate 1500,....

I would guess that the only reason that these receivers are popular is because of the LAN port and 'gift'.

Which is not really a gift as the cost of the boxes is more than the equivalent mVision receiver.

There are motor faults that have been reported with them (the image I think)- otherwise not a bad receiver .. except as Robbo has mentioned- it's thought to have the same insides as an mVision

Ive only installed one, and the Motor control was spot on. There was a problem with the box crashing when scanning a particular transponder on 19E, but this is documented, and just needs a firmware update to cure it.

Lovely thread on Digital Woldz about the mVision / spiderbox thing & reported motor faults & gives an insight to the real pro's behind it. Seen faults on a few motors - but on the Motecks/TMs (just some revisions I think) they still get there - just in jerks.

I connected it to a Navigator motor, come to think of it, it didn't go in short steps, but it seemed to go past the sat and back again. I assumed that this was some sort of backlash compensation in either the motor or the receiver. Not something I have ever seen before on any of the other motors like Dark,TM or Moteck.

For what it's worth..

I tested a Spiderbox HD9000 this afternoon against a TM5400 for sensitivity (a good test as TMs are sensitive & it's important to a lot after weak signals) .. only a quick test- just pushed an LNB arm up a bit to near break up on a Triax.. I'd say they were pretty close ..but they break up at that level slightly differently- the TM carries on with blockies & clitches at that very low level & you could watch it... the Spiderbox just freezes frames then moves on a few frames with the sound carrying on & just shows a few blockies now and again. So about the same but I prefer the way TM shows very low level.

@ Robbo... what do you think of the Navigators- done a couple .. very light - little bit noisier I think.. and not Moteck or Darkmotor badge.

It was fixed a while ago and works very well on new CCcam's.

I've only fitted one on a motor as well, a Dark Motor, it seemed to work OK. I believe the Starview 9600 LAN is identical without the "Gift" as well, although that doesn't seem to be so well supported.

I would say it's a pretty good box, certainly without the tuner issues of DM800 clones and much easier for the novice to use and setup.
