Default iphone unlock the next chapter

hey guys...
ive read that lost of people have been able to use the dfu method to downgrade their iphones (3gs on 4.0.2) but for some reason whenever i change the hosts file it either doesnt save or crashes the pc and i have to reinstall the os from scratch! which is a pain in the ar*e to say the least.

so what i was thinking is anyone near to huddersfield or in huddersfield managed to do this without too much hassle fancy having a go on my 3gs?

i think its my pc,, running win7 and it argues with me when i try to do anything.

anyone wanna help? before i sell this one and buy a jailbroken one?

regards

i sorted mine dude, after 4 mins on msn with someone

i did it like this:

backed up my contacts,

put the iphone into dfu and when it says found a phone in recovery mode, i did a normal restore to 4.02

after that removed the phone off the usb and your see back to normal.

now when you look at the host file, make sure has the ::1 at bottom as well as that ip addy
::1
127.0.0.1 localhost
#74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

save, open itunes, put phone into dfu and then reconnect to usb, when the warning comes up this time, shift+click on restore and search for the 4.01 firmware you downloaded

worked for me, my host file was just missing the ::1

hi..

sorted mine too,, didnt need the dfu mode though, once i realised i needed to open notepad with the admin privileges i could save the host file then itunes allowed me to downgrade without the dfu mode.

its great now i have access to a zillion free apps lol.

hi,,
you have to make sure the hosts file is changing when you save it.... once saved open it and check to see iof the chages have stuck.

i had no problems once i used admin to open notepad.

running win 7 mate,
checked it had changed the first time i edited it.
read somewhere that if i didn't save the shsh files with cydia that the downgrade wouldn't work so think i'm stuck on 4.0.2 till a ack comes out!
