How to root HTC Desire, Hero, Wildfire

I did it the old fashioned way but easier ways appeared since then...
Go here and pick your phone....

Run the reflash_package.exe you downloaded and extract the files to a sutable location.
Follow the instructions in the .html file to install the HBOOT driver.
If you have it, uninstall HTC Sync (leave HTC Driver Installer)
Reboot your PC.
With Desire go to Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Disk drive then Untick ‘Ask Me’
Then go to Settings > Applications > Development > Make sure USB Debugging is ticked.
Then go back to Applications and make sure Unknown Sources is ticked.
Start the reflash.exe in Admin mode (Right Click > Run as Admin (Only required for Windows Vista + 7)
If you want to install Amon Ra Recovery (Not needed unless you want to), download it and in UnrEVOked go to File > Custom Recovery and select the recovery image.
Connect your Desire.
Wait (it should take about 1-2 minutes)
Then, your Desire should be in recovery mode! Hit reboot.
Step 2 – Installing a Custom ROM (Optional but recommended)

I use Ledroid 2.0 personally

Hi Danielle, Ican get this far Start the reflash.exe in Admin mode (Right Click > Run as Admin (Only required for Windows Vista + 7)
then all I get is (failed to flash recovery image) any ideas?

I updated to 2.2 OTA a few weeks back, is this reason my phone will not go past flash recovery image?
If this is the reason anyone who gets a new Desire they will come with 2.2 loaded and have SLCD screens, I have read they go blank if you root them, this can be put back though if you done it by mistake.
I done a fastboot and I have HBOOT 0.93 on mine.
If, I got mine before the 2.2 came out, I done OTA on my phone, I never used unrevoked prior to this and I'm hoping I have a amoled screen, can I degrade the 2.2 to an earlier version. Then root.

xda forums is your best bet m8 they seem to be the dons at this sort of thing..being tight i'm waiting for the desire hd to come out so i can get the normal desire cheap

Thanks Leeds6, to be honest mate I was hoping to keep it in here so others can learn in this thread and in techwatch. I did take a peep and found my answer though, HBOOT 0.83 was my reason I could not go past flash recovery image.

i've got a desire HD on THREE 4 days old, so assuming it as all the latest software froyo's etc

can this still be rooted using the same guide?

Hi am getting the HTC Desire this week should i root my HTC was also woundering if I can put garmin mobile on it as I got that on my Nokia and love the sat nav
