Default satellite splitters

Evening people,i have a question for you sat experts out there, currently i have a freesat setup in my bedroom as i had the trusty cable box eurovox downstairs.I also had a coax feed from the sky box output to a tv downstairs and had a remote eye connected to change channel. But since cable is now going nagra 3 id like to improve my sat knowledge.i this week purchased a 2nd hand dream 500s (clone),for the time being till i learn about cs im happy to stick with FTA channels.what i propose to do is as follows.Currently i have a fixed sly mini dished fixed to 28.2E,there is a thompson single LNB fitted and the cable goes to my sly box in my bedroom which feeds the ex sly box with the fta channels.what i would like to know is could i put a splitter on the main sat feed, then on the splitter feed the ex skybox(amstrad) in the bedroom and the dm500s downstairs with the 2 outputs on the splitter.this is just a temporay solution as i have a the cable run from upstairs to downstairs already and it would just mean changing the connectors to f type and the down stairs feed.i totally understand only 1 box can be used at a time until i get a dual/quad LNB but i ask is this a viable approach?i look foward to your reply.

Possibly would work, but the splitter would need to pass DC on both legs, and with it doing that it would be unadvisable to have both boxes switched on at the same time, as there could be different voltages from each box.

Another, and safer way to do it would be to run one box from the IF out of the other. As long as the 1st box is off, it should be OK.

Yep, that's the best option. You can pick up sky quad LNB from fleabay for next to nothing, mostly all for MK4 dishes now, so if you have a MK3, you'd need to make sure that the LNB came with the MK3 adapter, or get one.
