If your thinking of using a VPN to protect yourself at some point then make sure you have a vpn compatible router. Something running (or capable of running) dd-wrt would be the best and cheapest option.

WRT54G type routers are popular as are quite a few others from the Linksys range. If you want dd-wrt though then you need to be very careful of the router version. You'll find ebay flooded with router versions that aren't capable of running this alternative firmware.

For the WRT54G steer clear of version 7 or any router that doesn't specify the version (or ask for clarification from the seller). I'd recommend a version 6 or earlier model.

Why steer clear of version 7 TheCoder?
Ive got 2 WRT54G routers, one with 2.2 and one with version 7 on,I currently have my VPN set up on the 2.2 version purely by chance.
Is the version 7 useless for VPN?

Anyone that has a dlink dir-615 D model or a wnr2000v2 from virginmedia can be flashed with dd wrt very easily.

The dlink is usually cheap on ebay.

If you check the router database it will tell you that Linksys WRT54G version 7 is not possible.
