I wouldn't take legal ADVICE FROM people who randomly USE CAPITALS and don't PUNCTUATE VERY WELL!?^

I'd guess the CCCP who posted that has a vested interest in Starview boxes. Saying that, there's nothing there that wasn't already known. Can you get caught? Yes. Will you get caught? Possibly.

What he is saying you could also be caught using your previous box which he is correct, all they had to do was go to the green box and they would have known, and just because people dont punctuate very well what has that got to do with anything nothing, some people spell as it sounds and what also makes you think he works for Starview, ?? he never once said you cant be caught did he ?? what he said if you actually digest the story is, the only way they can do anything to intefer with your privacy is if they get a court order, NOW honestly!! how are they going to get court orders to go around the majority of homes that have boxes, look at the amount of man power, not to mention hours of work that would be needed for this task, can you imagine them bringing all these people to court ......... well your honour we suspect these people where viewing Tv illegally over the net .......... what about the people that dont use the box, but there modem has been cloned ...... whoops claim claim claim ......... are they going to take that chance excatly .............. are they.??

There's nothing wrong with poor punctuation/spelling/grammar - as long as the message gets across the communication has done it's job. I just wouldn't take legal advice from someone who hasn't made an effort to learn the language in it's written format.

Aside from some common sense speculation, the posted article says nothing, other than the opinion of the poster is that it is unlikely you will get caught. I also read his article "Smoking a spliff in your back garden won't incur a raid from the drugs squad", and the enlightening follow up "Jailbreaking your iPhone will not cause AIDS".

I would say the poster has an interest in the sales of SV's as it's a fairly unbalanced assessment of the whole risks, with no facts, just speculation that VM wouldn't have the resources to bring a case against everybody using Starviews.

What's the legal standpoint on VM taking a good look at a VM BB customer whom they suspect of using the service outside the terms and conditions of their contract? I can't see it being as hard to get data about your own customers. What's to say that Virgin won't have a taskforce dedicated to getting only a few pirate's scalps - they might be happy to get a few well publicised cases to court as a deterrent. They don't have to bust everyone with a hookey box to get the result they're after. What's to say that they'd want to bring criminal charges, maybe they'd be happy to terminate any contracts with customers whom they "suspect" of getting UKGold+1 free.

Can you get caught? Yes. Will you get caught? Possibly. Hardly enough information to elevate someone to deity status.

They are not looking for small fry, they are after the main catch i wish them luck with that one, to me and what you are saying you are as bad as him, a person that wants to scare people as well, maybe im wrong, just my view, or you dont like people getting something for nothing because you want to pay full wack for it.

So you know they're not looking for small fry for a fact? You can state that with no uncertainty? I can ring VM up and tell them I'm running a Kryptview and they won't mind?

I don't want to scare anyone, but I wouldn't like to give people reassurance based on my opinion either, especially over something that could lead to a criminal conviction. I'm not stating anything about "THE TRUTH" regarding CS on cable. Neither is the guy in the OP.

I couldn't give a toss about anyone getting something for nothing. As long as that something isn't coming out of my pocket I'm fairly indifferent.

The OP is a generic statement about how it would be unlikely for VM to go after prosecuting every user of CS equipment. Groundbreaking stuff.

I wouldn't pretend to be an expert on the subject, but I would say it's a bit more complex than "It's too much trouble, so VM won't do anything".

Lets take this one step at a time !

Quote:
IM A CISCO CCNP ( PROFESSSIONAL ) FOR 16 YEARS
For someone who claims to be a Cisco network professional he has a remarkably naive idea of how networks work. The contents of his post lead me to doubt very much this guys credentials !

Quote:
YES they can be traced - just as eurovoxs and all other boxes were traceable but they never had manpower to do it so changed to nagra 3 at a high cost
Yes, they can be traced but NOTHING like the way eurovoxes were traced. CS boxes will almost certainly be traced solely by their internet activity rather than by checking cable characteristics. CS boxes are thus FAR easier to trace !

The changing to Nagra3 was neither VM's choice nor high cost. The old N1 system was no longer supported so VM's only choice were to allow Kudelski to update to a supported system (mostly at Kudelski's expense as the system is effectively rented) or to move to a totally different system, which really would of cost them a lot and meant severe customer disruption.

Quote:
STAFF - they will need to treble there staff to trace internet feeds like these. WILL THEY DO THIS ????
Will they thump need to treble anything. They have more than enough resources already to do whats necessary. A few high profile prosecutions and you can be bet the majority of people will be dumping boxes in the local canal by the lorry full !

Quote:
THEY will need to trace all internet service providers - AOL, VIRGIN, SKY, ORANGE, TALK TALK, O2, VODAFONE, T-MOBILE, TISCALI.. and more!!!!

THIS WILL TAKE MONTHS DUE TO DATA PROTECTION ACT
Dont you think they will start with the easy targets that are using their own network ?

Vm's most likely move will be to go for these easy targets and bring a few high profile proscutions in the hope of scaring the majority into compliance. I've no doubt they will succeed in a large number of cases !

As for tracing customers on other ISP's, well, its not as difficult as this so called network professional makes out. Logging IP's connecting to a certain server IP is relatively easy for an ISP so they can rapidly build up a database of errant client IP's. Once that is presented to the authorities the data protection act etc has little impact as it will essentially be a criminal investigation. A disclosure warrant is all thats required and all other ISP's are then required to co-operate.

Quote:
THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THESE IS TO BLOCK ALL PORTS ON MODEM/ROUTERS, APART FROM PORT 80 WHICH IS MOST OF THE INTERNET..

THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THESE IS TO BLOCK ALL PORTS ON MODEM/ROUTERS, APART FROM PORT 80 WHICH IS MOST OF THE INTERNET..

IF THEY DO THIS ... SAY GOODBYE TO 30% OF INTERNET, 50% OF ALL VIDEO STREAMING ( YOU TUBE ETC) ALL DOWNLOADING VIDEOS, CD'S FROM PEER 2 PEER SITES

ALL ONLINE GAMING FOR PC, PS3, XBOX LIVE, DOWNLOADING APPLE APPLICATIONS OVER WIFI. AS ALL CONNECT TO SERVERS ON DIFFERENT PORTS ON EVERY OCCASION...

THIS WOULD TAKE APPROX 1-2 YEARS TO DO AND CAUSE ALL COMPANYS £1000'S AND 5-6 YEARS TO GET ALL INTERNET, ONLINE GAMING ETC WORKING AGAIN
This is just pure tripe as anybody with a modicum of network knowledge ought to know.

The main thing to note is that CS could occur on any port, so what do you think would happen if everything except port 80 were blocked ?

Port 80 may be used for http but it most certainly is not restricted to that particular protocol.

Then of course you've got other ports that simply cant be blocked. Email, FTP, HTTPS (the list goes on)...........

Anybody that thinks the internet could function with only port 80 open is seriously deranged. If VM were to suggest such a thing (which they most certainly wont) they would be laughed off any internet steering groups they are a member of !!!

Any Cisco certified professional that publishes such upper tripe really ought to be stripped of the qualification !
