Well personally I'm no Bambi But seriously, a good Plumber isn't dear. Not when you consider the anual cost of :-

Running a Van
Gas Safe Membership
NIC/EIC Membership (or Similar)
Insurance
Meter Calibration
Replacing Tools
Re-Training

And the initial outlay of

The Van, The Tools, The Meters, not forgetting of course the time spent learning the trade, and in some cases the cost of learning the trade.

And also remember when you pay a bill and think "ohhhh that's expensive" what comes out of that money, fuel, materials and the biggy Tax. Plus no paid holiday, no sickness pay and no employer pension contributions.

Besides which wouldn't you want to be reasonably well paid to go quite remove someone elses poo from a blocked toilet or drain ? It's really not a nice job, especially those times you have no choice but to literally get your hands dirty ! Trust me, gloves aren't that much concellation. Or how about getting out of bed at 2 AM to go stop water running through someones ceiling ?

And if you think a good plumber is expensive, just wait till you hire a bad one, then you will see expensive.

i once used a long whippy branch (cut from a bush in the back garden) to unblock the toilet, the water had reached the rim and i used the branch to to get around the bend and free the blockage !

I used a spare washing-machine water-inlet hose.
