You need network access, but not a valid MAC address.

oh, I didn't think a network device would work without a mac address, as this is basics of networking how a router identifies each device.. but I'll give it a go with static IP/DNS settings and see if it works, but I dont have high hopes.

The ones that I have tried all get a valid IP address by DHCP even with the invalid MAC. Don't know if that's Router dependent - have you tried it?
