Anyone here heard of mobile phone tracking? Is it really possible? How is it done? Would the person need access to the phone or could it be done simply with the phone number? How does one prevent it? Are old mobile phones more or less susceptible to being tracked?

In the UK is mostly done by cell-site triangulation. Basically, they check the power received at a cell and various neighbours and then, because they know the reception characteristics of every cell, they determine your location. It can be pretty accurate in densely populated areas that have lots of mobile cells but its far less accurate in rural areas although it still gives a general indication of your position.
The technique is really only available to the phone companies and law enforcement. In the US, a large quantity of mobiles have built in GPS systems which effectively report your position to the nearest metre or two (including your height above sea-level). I'm not sure if this data is automatically transmitted to cells during the regular "hear I am" transmissions or not or whether this info is available to anybody but the mobile companies/law enforcement |

You can track a mobile yourself, there are company's that let you do this, you can find them on the internet, you enter the phone number and then that phone gets several text messages asking if you want to accept the tracking, once that is confirmed your all set. Some people use a hidden mobile in a caravan as a free alternative to satellite tracking.

Or do you only have to agree the first time ? If its the latter then the companies running it are likely commiting several criminal offences (as are the mobile phone companies by providing the base data to an unauthorised party) unless they have a fairly short agreement time (maybe 24 hours if your lucky). Of course, you also would be commiting an offences by actually tracking another person in this manner. Last edited by TheCoder; 20-11-10 at 04:04 PM. |

I use Mr tracker from Mobile Phone Tracking Spy - Monitor SMS Text Messages, Call Info and GPS Locations on iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Mobile and Symbian OS Smartphones. Spy Software for Monitoring your Cell Phone - Mobile PhoneTracking Cell Phone Tracking Syste works pretty well when it come to locating or tapping cell.
The application was sent to me via SMS server on blackberry. I did not receive the app by sms on my iphone 4 and had to install it by P.C which includes a PC based version connecting Via internet to the SMS gateway. On my 3gs I used Mr Tracker via cydia and that worked very well. Also make sure you don't use a torent link or a free download it will not work because you need to register you imie number and maybe possibilitiy of a virus. I would just purchase it . its 100% money back guarantees RISK-FREE, so if you have difficultly just ask for a refund, Once your register your Imie number i dont think you allowed a refund. |

You accept the texts first then hide a phone connected to a 12v phone charger remembering you will need to access the phone every 6 months to make a call or your sim card is deactivated. It is not illegal as both party's, you and the phone user have to agree to the tracking before it is activated.
