I am reading on this stuff and I'm not sure exactly what this means I see it in menus and general use . Stupid question --maybe .please enlighten me.

Hi, pretty sure it means changing channels with the remote control (The zapper).

Of American origins I would have thought.

As Robbo says,it refers to channel hopping,and seems to have entered numerous satellite receiver manuals.
Even the satellite reference website King of Sat refers to itself as:
