Default Display flickering on start-up

Having dusted my VM box down to start using it again (unfortunately!!!!) I'm having problems getting it to boot up properly; can anybody help?

It's a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4200DVB & when it's powered up the display constantly flickers very dimly. I've left it on for a few hours but it doesn't go beyond the flickering.

I've had this in the past & googled to find a fix that actually worked, but can't find it again? Some suggest holding in Vol+/Vol- buttons on power up but the box doesn't have these!

Any suggestions please?
