No

There was one, called I think the DW800, did'nt work dissapeared quietly. Maybe hundreds / thousands ? bought it, who knows how many !.

There has been one due for release ' anytime soon ' for most of this year, people will tell you .. .. .. well the anytime soon is a continuing rehersal for a show that never happens, we wait ... and wait .. and wait .. .. ..

No my friend.

Dont think there were many bought, few hundred maybe. It actually worked quite well but so few were bought that it was doomed to failure. No manufacturer can support something that doesn't sell for too long !

Its main problem I suspect was that it was ahead of its time. There really wasn't much in the way of HD TV on cable when it was released thus no real reason for people to purchase it.

It would perhaps do better now but I guess that particular bridge has been burned. With the device no longer in production I guess its firmware is so far out of date that it would be simpler for the manufacturer to just buy in a new solution and start from scratch in order to support CS.

Interesting response TheCoder, I always assumed it was ' goosed ' from the go~got~go. Lack of support is a revalation to me. I [ previous posts evidence ] bought the EX700HD-PVR, a more than excellent 1080 box and when it died looked again at the DW800.

An avid footie mechanic I was ony interested in the HD sport and music, BBC / ITV / and the SANTANA ( I think thats what they called it ) were already transmitting footie in HD. Additionally BBC were transmitting BBC Sessions, a music purist's channel in HD. It was only a question of weeks let alone months / years [ predicted by el-reg ]before more and more came on stream, and that turned out to be exactly the case.

Shame on us all if a decent bit of kit went arthritic before it could even walk.

Your comment[s] on the QUOTE ' new HD version '. I don't see why it is that difficult. The pics come down the pipe anyway, only the codes come via ethernet. As for the HD graphics output side of the box, if the E7000HD was able to do it cheaply enough all that time ago I see no barriers now.

As for the ' new HD ' as I said earlier its a rehersal for a show that never happens, when they hit the dealers and work to a satisfactory standard, then and only then will I become a beleiver !
it was a bit of both that killed off the dw800, as stated by the coder and bob was that hdtv was practically non existent on cable side, i remember getting one of the first v+ boxes and other than the pvr it was a waste of time. so when noone invested in these 3rd party hd recievers then the manufacturers couldnt afford to lose out on even more money, rewriting firmware and developing servers to make it n3 or c/s ready. so even though its not that difficult to add a hd tuner or hdmi output, its the time and money invested in it. which brings the question 'would it be profitable?' as the a780 is £150 so how much would an hd version cost? £250-300, cant see many ppl running out to buy one.

i think when sales die down for the a780 they will bring out the HD box but there is no need for them to bring out another box when the a780 is selling so well.

Bit of both is an honest appraisal of the why, as for the cost my point was we :

- already had a more than excellent Ex7000HD-PVR on N2 [ cable only ]
- we now only have a non HD-PVR on N3 [ cable & net ]
- so the only extra element[s] are (1) HD tuner and (2) the rendering output chipset and (3) if you want to add PVR / USB recording function.

100% agreed, its design / etc is almost certainly ready to go to production at a moments notice and has been for six months. Its business, milk this cow till its dry .. .. .. and roll out a new high yield cow.
