Default Replacement hard drive?

I have a HP Pavilion s7000 desktop and the hard drive is on it's last legs. It's been really acting up lately and crashed the other day. Managed to get it running again but it sounds very rough. Also failed the 'Smart short self test' which, from what I've read, is not a good sign.. There's a Samsung 2gb sata drive in it at the moment. Any recommendations for a replacement? Thanks.

It's all down to what you're willing to pay I've used Sammies, Seagates, Maxtor's, WD's in the past, never yet had one fail though, to be fair.
Currently have 4 WD's in 2 raid 1 NAS drives, plus another WD in the main desktop.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I tend to buy seagate(maxtor),samsung or wd-whichevers cheapest

Saying that, I tend to buy WD as they normally have greener, quieter, more efficient drives

2gb seems small so i presume thats a typo.
ebuyer has good prices along with reviews so might be good as a referance point

Would still recommend WD green though. There's about £5 difference between brands. Hard drives don't use much power, however if you do get a WD green drive, the difference will pay for itself.
You get quality
You get performance
You have a low carbon drive
Ultimately(my favourite lol), your actually saving money using WD drives

Quieter and more efficient would certainly interest me. Any links?

You could get this:
Western Digital WD2500BEVT 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive.. | Ebuyer.com
and this:
NEW! 2.5" to 3.5" Hard Disk Drive HDD Mounting Bracket on eBay (end time 09-Dec-10 22:53:55 GMT)

Or, you could get one of these as well
Western Digital WD5000AADS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII.. | Ebuyer.com

Or, even this one
Western Digital WD6400AADS 640GB Hard Drive SATAII.. | Ebuyer.com

The 640GB drive may be best for your money, though 2.5" drives are put in laptops because they use less power, so for the most efficient and cost effective HDD, Id probably get the 250GB 2.5" drive, and with the mounting brackets for your PC

I came across this review on Amazon regarding the 'Green' WD drives. Shouldn't copy and paste I know but...

''I bought a pair of these to go in my NAS, but was unpleasantly surprised to notice they suffer from a 'Load Cycle Count' problem - which is fairly well publicised on the net I later found out. For those who haven't followed this, the WD Green disks implement a power saving feature where they ship the heads of the drive if the drive has been inactive for a few seconds. Linux-based NAS systems (which is most of them) write out small fragments of data every minute or so, which means the drive has to unship the drive head. You can query your drive's LLC through S.M.A.R.T. and see it ticking up by about 1000 a day.

The drives are specc'ed to a max lifetime LLC of 300k, so you can see where this is heading (groan). It's very poor that there hasn't been a fix for this straight off the bat after 3-4 months since it was first noticed, other than WD telling people to attach the drives to a windows pc and run wdidle.exe to 'lessen' the problem (this reduced the problem by about half).''

Are you aware of this LLC problem? I'd rather have a gas guzzling V8 engine running the hard drive and have no problems.
