Hi,

Looking at purchasing a motorola 4100 or 4200. I'm ex-NTL but have no idea whether I am ex-CW or not. How can I find this out so that I know whether to purchase an E or I model?!

As a side question - Where does one obtain a config file for such a modem?

I have seen a map somewhere with the area's on it, but can't remember where.

The "i" modem will not work on ex C&W, but the "e" model should work on both with the correct firmware. I only have experience of "i" modems so can't help with "e" modem's.

AIUI, the 250 modem will also work on both, they can be hacked now using an RS232 interface - I've seen them pre-hacked on ebay.

The modem downloads the config file itself, you just specify the config file name in the modem setup, there are different methods for each different firmware.

I found a link that shows me to be on the Langley platform (which I believe to be pure ntl). As long as I sub to a TV package - could I drop the Broadband altogether or should I stay subbed to that also? Thanks again

You could drop the BB, they will probably offer you a good deal to keep it though.

One last question for this thread (promise!).
When I have got some macs to use (from a different UBR), does it matter that they are mid or low accounts associated with those Macs? I've not found any golds, but I am hoping that the config file I specify will override this?

That is correct, so long as you have an active MAC, you will get network access. The modem will then download and use the specified config file.

In the Haynes Guide on the gmail drive - it says:

"The thing I always do as well is get rid of all the slower config files cause you no you will never use them so there is no point in having a list of them
Only keep your mid and high ones, there is also a 10meg at min as well."

Is that incorrect information then? That's what's confused me

On the 120 and 200 modems, you cannot force a config file so you would need a high rated MAC for those.
