Default ntl modem problem via router

hi friends

been trying to set up a net gear router for my nephew via an old ntl home broadband modem on vm which he has connected to his pc with no problems at all,when i set up the router and connect to the modem the enet light on the modem goes out.....i've been through the net gear set up and checked all the leads a half a dozen times but to no avail,i've set up a few routers but never came across this problem...any ideas?

have you checked the ethernet lead for breaks and also you may have a cross over cable? just a thought bud

I hope you're connecting the netgear from one of the ethernet ports, not the WAN port.

its says on the set up manual to connect the ethernet port from cable modem to wan port on netgear router with yellow lead,as my nephew lives 10 miles away i'll not get out to tommorrow evening to have a look at this option.
do you think this would be the problem?

Most likely, it won't work if it isn't connected to the WAN port. Also, as tiger56 said, try using a ethernet patch cable as opposed to a cross over cable.

Definitely not to the WAN port, as the signal protocols and usage are for connection to an ADSL line directly.
You've already provided the 'modem' function, so you are just getting the signal to where it can be routed on your local network.
