My friend had her computer in storage for over a year. The storage was not climate controlled.
I brought it out of storage and tried to start it up after hooking up monitor, mouse, and keyboard. The monitor does not display any image. I opened the case. All fans work including the cpu fan. All lights come on. However there is a blinking red light on the mobo. Any idea what this light is telling me? Is the mobo fried? Please help. This is a Gateway 510. And the location of the storage was Houston, TX.

bios battery ! remove the bios battery, then remove power lead, hold power button on for 10 seconds....put battery back in,put power lead in then press the power up button.....or if you powered up with out a surge protection socket then the power supply has died
....but don't worry they ain't that expensive

I would be so refreshing if once in a while the answer in a forum would be complete. This answer could have been more complete by stating where the bios battery is located.

Check Ram and clean ram slots with a little fine brush as dust can stop it functioning properly and reset Cmos. Could also be a faulty graphics card. Worth trying another graphics card aswell.

Find the jumper pins located closest to the buios battery, you cant miss it, its like a big watch battery. Short the two pins with a screwdriver or something and turn power on. BIOS will now be reset. The PSU is not dead if there is a red light on the mobo. And PSU's ARE indeed expensive. If you buy properly. Don't buy crappy #10 PSU's for your system. They explode and kill motherboards. |
