the original poster asked a simple question to which he got the simple answer he required.

lets not go creating confusion, factual or not.

plug modem into lan port = nothing funtionally useable

plug modem into the correct WAN port (as per instructions, user guide, net tutorials and the majority or people here) = correct NAT protocols and internet and all the fuctionallality you'd expect
Couldnt have said it better myself mate. I highly doubt it that the method would work as I cant see how that work actually even work. As stated above the routing would then become pointless and not to mention the device connected to the router would NOT even have access to the Internet

Its like buying a Car but with out a battery and still expect it to switch on..lol

Or having a ADSL router and not plugging in the Rj11 into the phone socket and expect to have access to the internet.

Default Re: routers

I wasn't trying to confuse - merely to warn of a possible problem, brought on by some confusion (industry promulgated) in naming and function of devices.

There are
1. single output port cable modems, designed to plug directly to the ethernet port of a PC
2. modem/routers designed for ADSL work, which have a WAN port (not compatible with LAN ethernet use) and one or more ethernet LAN ports and, possibly wireless.
3. cable routers, similar to above, but with a Cable port rather than a WAN port
4. routers designed to be used with cable modems, having LAN type ethernet ports on both the Cable/ADSL side and the LAN side
5. Wireless access points
6. switches

There are also now appearing a new set which are configurable for multiple roles - especially since the need to switch from places Cable supplied, those with ADSL broadband, and those with the BT Infinity.

Just ensure you get the correct one, or make sure you know how to connect them.

Good luck

I would go for a wireless router that supports DDWRT firmware I use a Netgear WNR2000 V2 it a wireless N router €85 in pcworld, its a good reliable router and with ddwrt on it, it works as a vpn server among other things.

Most routers nowadays have the port labelled INTERNET
