Exclamation Reduce server load

Don't know about you, but my HD combo is hardly ever powered off, even when the TV is switched off.
Surely if everyone powered off their boxes when not in use they would not be in constant communication with the server and greatly reduce it's ever increasing strain.

So, my new years resolution is .... Power off my box when not in use!

*actually, I've just powered off the SV and my router says it's still connected? Is my new years resolution useless?

my server guy for the sat side asks people when not using it to turn it off at the mains to keep the server free for other users.

makes sense doesnt it!

and would be a good idea for all users to do so.

regards dave

tbh, it probably really makes little difference. The largest amount of comms is during the authentication phase so the worst situation would possibly be loads of people all switching their boxes back on at the same time !

lol yeah so turn it off or leave it on? its up to the individual, i believe it helps the server to stay uncluttered!

mind u its easy for me to switch over to the sat server and use that for a few hours per day, im sure that takes a bit of strain off the sv servers.

anyway what else can we do? its how it is and we have to cope with it...

regards

I've started to notice that switching it back on can be a bit of a pain. Scrambled channel appears for a while and sometimes requires a re-boot to sort out. Think I'll scrap that idea!
Happy new year everyone.

Ive been away from home over the holidays visiting family, I brought my kv with me to use here, at home I leave my box on, while I'm here they turn it off. Man Utd game this week on ss1 I turned the kv on 5 mins before kick off and as you know we had problems, if everyone done as I done would this make a difference, to many boxes trying to connect at the same time, where as if the box was left on then no server overload all at the same time.

That would likely reduce comms significantly although I imagine there will still be a 'keep alive' signal transmitted periodically or the server will likely auto log you off after a period of inactivity.

No doubt something similar would happed when the box is in standby mode.
