![]() When i start up my notebook, i get a blue screen with the following info; STOP: c0000137 (privilege failed) The I/O permissions for the process could not be changed. The notebook is an Advent 4211-c When i turn it on, advent logo comes up, and the options for advanced startup briefly (1 Second), then a black screen with something like "choose which operating system to load – It auto selects the recovery within about a second, continues with the windows xp logo and then the blue screen. Apart from this I can’t do anything at all with it, any help at all would be much appreciated,..jay

Must be an old machine to be XP. Have you got the recovery disks for it, or the original XP disk? If you have either try putting one of them in the drive, turn off the laptop and reboot it. if it does not run the disk, then you might need to hit the f2 key when it is booting and set the boot sequence to cd/dvd at the top of the list and try again. Have you tried hitting the f8 or f12 key whilst it is booting, you might be able to get into to start in safe mode and try to find out what is the matter then, by running some checks, I would start with malwarebites you can download it from the net. it might just be some virus which is causing you the trouble. I would try the safe mode to see if you can sort it that way first because if you reinstall XP then you will loss all you have on the machine.
Good luck and reagrds Wez

Thanks guys, have tried the F8 key (Advanced Boot Options) and get a screen with safe mode option and other optionspress safe mode option and it goes through Loading windows/system32/driver files Then Blue screen with this messeage STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error) Have tried other options in this section but end up with the this message. Then try the F2 Key (Windows Boot Manager) This gives me 2 options to choose from Windows XP or The Techguys Recovery Press windows XP option and it loads up windows xp welcome screen with sound, goes to my desktop page but no icons or taskbar Press Techguys Recovery option and now get the Blue screen with message, STOP: c0000137 (privilege failed) The I/O permissions for the process could not be changed. As it is a Notebook and not a laptop there is no accessible disc drive and it came pre loaded with xp and software The notebook is about 2 years old, bought it for my grandson, and i assume he has in error deleted crucial files. Thanks for you're replys...jay

Hi sorry to hear all that. When you get to the screen using the XP boot option is there any way you can do anything with it then? If you can run some anti virus or anti malware software on it you might find something that way. I know you said that it does not have a disk drive, but if it has USB then you can install the software that way.
Hope you find a way round this. What age is your grandson? A have had to sort out a friends daughters laptop more times than enough, she goes and downloads music and get all sorts of rubbish when she does. She is 15 and you would imagine that she would have more sense than to go back for more viruses and that, but they say free music and that is a big draw, just like naughty stuff, they know that by offering free stuff they will get the kids to come there and get all the bugs and viruses of the day. Regards Wez
