Hi
I am not a tekkie at all and do not understand audio, optical vs HDMI etc, so I need some help please. I have been trawling various forums but I cannot find a thread that fully answers my set up question so hopefully someone out there will know the answer? I have a PS3, Sky HD, an HDTI and a Blu-ray surround sound system. nI know I probably didn't need the Blu-ray as I have a PS3 but I do. I am wanting to set these up so that I can watch sky tv in surround sound, play my PS3 in surround sound and obviously watch blu-ray in surround sound, hopefully without having to disconnect wires each time I switch devices. My Blu-ray player is Samsung HT-C5500. It has 2 HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, a digital optical input as well. I have 3 HDMI cables and also an optical cable. But the instruction book does not tell me have to set up the combination of devices I have. So if I want to watch everything in surround sound (depending if the broadcast is in surround sound) they how do I connect these devices with the cables I have, and do I need to do any settings on my TV, or the other devices as well, other then turn the sound down on the TV?? Any advice much appreciated and please in layman's terms if at all possible as I just can't get my head around this!! Many thanks |

Wow I didn't think it would be as easy as that. I got all confused as someone told me HDMI would not carry the surround sound accurately and hence I would need an optical cable as well.
Many thanks |

HDMI does carry sound and Video... and from what am aware of is that it does carry surround sound accurately. HDMI 1.3 Supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams. Last edited by unadkat; 12-01-11 at 09:53 PM. |

sorry to drag this thread up but i just wanted to add one point .
its less to do with the cable and more to do with the player / recievers . e.g. some sourround sound amps dont output sound via the hdmi monitor output . but why would they as the amp will be taking care of the sound . Its important to read the manual before buying a product to make sure it has all your input / output requirements before buying . |

I have looked at the manual and there is a section called HDMI audio, which says... "The audio signals transmitted over HDMI Cable can be toggled on/off.
Off - video is transmitted over the HDMI cable only and udio is poutput through the product speakers only On - both video and audio signals are transmitted over the HDMI connection cable, and audio is output through your TV speakers only If I am ready that correctly, then if I connect my ps3 & sky hd via HDMI to the home cinema, then from home cinema to TV via HDMI, then select on, then I WONT hear sky of PS3 in surround sound as the sound will only come through the TV speakers, not the surround speakers. Is that correct as that defeats the object of what I am trying to achieve, i.e. having surround sound for all my devices. If I am correct, looks like I have cocked up with the system I have bought, or can I rectify this at all by using an optical cable anywhere?? thanks |

sorry to be completely clueless here, so if i have sky hd to the surround sound system via HDMI, then both video and audio will go from sky into the surround sound. Then have another hdmi from the surround system to tv, then select the HDMI audio off, then the sound from Sky will come out of the surround sound speakers and the picture only will go from the surround sound to the TV, in essence exactly what I want? And the same for the PS3?
thanks |
