Default What box to get...

Hi, my sub sy box is on it's way out, it keeps freezing and just in general it's a very old box. Here remember this:

I'm not even subscibed to sy plus haha, that means on my LNB i just have the one cable running down, not the two, heck the LNB is a old single.

I've been looking around, and considering switching over to linux, either a dreambox or TM, i'm reading mixed things about dreamboxs and the same with TMs alot of it is very out dated posts though 2008. I know alittle bit about images and ccams although i've never done one before but would appreciate a challenge getting it set up to view my sy channels.

I'm not really going to ask about C/s at the moment as even though that could be an option for my own network around my home, i just want to get this setup first and see if i want to go anywere from there.

I was considering a Dreambox 500s or Dreambox 500c, is there a difference ? and the TM 500 or 600. The Dreambox 500 s or c is more in my price range for something i just want to test and mess about with for the first time.

i know the Dreamboxs in the 500 are clones but really i don't care as long as it all works. So what would you recommend you can see i'm more convinced at the moment to go for a Dreambox 500 and seeing as i have the old Amstrad reciever, then if a dreambox 500 is good enough to just take over i'm happy with that .

Any help would be appreciate.

The S and C stand for Satellite or Cable, and indicate which tuner is in the box. As your using a dish, you will want a S.

The Technomete 600 has pvr functionality, the 500 does not.

I'd recommend the Technomate over a dodgy DM500 clone.

And is it correct in saying that the only difference between the TM 500 and the 600 is PVR function ?

With the TM's you update over LAN, you shouldn't need the RS232 cable.

Yes the only differance is the PVR

Thanks Rick very helpful, like i said even though i'm not on sy plus and don't have a second cable running from my dish with this setup hopefully the 600 PVR would still recode externality to a USB HD, otherwise if it wouldn't then there would be no need for me getting a 600 and instead going with a 500.

Anyway Thanks again Rick.

None of these boxes require a second wire from the LNB in order for you to record.

if you get the Tm600 then you will be able to record to an ext HDD.

No need for a 2nd cable... And this system is only with the STB that sly provide you with.

The box you have above is not a sky plus box and its just there very 1 st box which they gave to there customers.
