I have a paid for, working modem with 20MB broadband capability in an upstairs room in house. I would however like it downstairs also. I can't use wireless - no signal (old house), really don't want to make it a wired network - drilling holes in walls etc.
I have a live cable point downstaris which has two points (one unused, one using the normal -not the plus TV box. I live in Nth lanarkshire area (if relevant). Can I add another unmodded cable modem to another part of the house which, again has an official wired point. Or would I have to buy a modem then mod it Thanks |

Yes you can add a second modem. There will be some cravats though.
If you clone your paid for modem, as in use the same MAC on the second, then you will only be able to have one or the other switched on at the same time. If you use a different MAC on the second modem, then you will be able to use both simultaneously. Dixie. PS I replied to this post over an hour ago, no idea where that original post went. |

While agreeing that a clone with a mac from a different ubr would work,if what your looking for is a solid connection you may be better off looking at a homeplug system.
Modems are returning to more of a hobby now than a plug and play item.

Agreed, the days of flash 'n forget are seemingly over. Hopefully that won't be for too much longer though.
I had a few months of not getting any more than four days use from a working MAC. Then I'd have to spend a few hours going through MACs until I found one that stayed on. Often getting only ten minutes, sometimes an hour or so, but still a pain. Thankfully I have found one that seem to be stable, and on 20M too. The OP should really have no problem with a wired network either. Seems from his post that there are already cables all over that house anyway. Slapping in a run of Cat5 shouldn't make too much difference. That or look into utilising a second wireless router and using its WDS function. Assuming the first router has one that is. Dixie. |

Thanks to all the suggestions. Never thought of the homeplug system, nor indeed the WDS option. Suppose sometimes the answers are "staring you in the face". It would also give me a reliable connection. Many thanks
