Default SB5100i Bootloader

I've just started playing around with an SB5100i and got it online using factory mode in the standard firmware used on these modems by VM.

I will be installing a serial port in the modem over the next few days and was just wondering if I need to blackcat a new bootloader onto it before I can use the serial port like I had to with the SB5101e?
