Hi guys. I'm new to this forum so hopefully I'm posting in the correct area.
The problem I'm having is with my router on an upstairs phone socket. When I connect my router to the main adsl/phone socket at my front door (built in filter) it connects without an issue but if I connect it to any other socket in my house the status light remains red and it will not connect to the Internet. If I connect a phone to any of these sockets it works fine and so the sockets are functional apart from Internet access so I'm assuming it must be the way they are wired up. I am using a large gaming tower for my pc so and it is situated in an upstairs bedroom so it is not practical to move it near the router which is downstairs so I have no choice but to connect wirelessly. However due to the distance between the two the signal is very weak and constantly disconnects. I have a phone socket right next to the pc so if anyone knows how I could get this socket working with my router it would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi I have never had asdl, I can only get wireless BB, but a friend had it in his house and as far as I am aware there are two lines, one for the phone and one for the BB, I am sure someone will know better then I do, but just want to say that if I am right then it is the phone only line you have on the remote sockets, to have the BB you would need to have the BB going to the extension for your PC, that is how I see it, I know it is not what you really need, but just my view on why you cannot connect to the net with the extension.
Regards Wez

Thanks for the reply. Yep - that makes sense as it seems these are phone only sockets. My next question is whether anyone knows if these extenstion sockets can be re wired in such a way they would provide bb support from my main socket. I recently phoned a guy in my local paper and he said he could re wire these but with a hefty £60 call out charge plus labour - a bit steep imo.
Again, any advise would be great. Cheers. |

open the sockets and you may find you only have a couple of wires connected out of the multicore wire . just connect the rest and you should be fine .

they can be re wired and its **** easy to do mate you will require a Insertion tool and wire stripping tool only 3 wires are used.. 2,3 and 5 Just make that you match both ends If you have a ADSL broadband then its a good to replace the face plate of your master socket with the BT accelerator one. Also you should plug your broadband into your Master socket if you want better speeds. Here is a guide: UK Telephone Wiring http://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-i...ator-58LT.html Kind regards

Just to add to the above, it is not necessary to connect the "3" wire, just connect 2&5 in all sockets. The "3" wire is not needed with modern phone equipment and in effect, the BT Accelerator cuts this link out anyway.
Also, don't forget that every device on the line will need to be connected via a filter, either as part of the socket (see NTE5 ADSL/Broadband Filter Master Socket Adaptor Plate) or as a standard plug-in adapter. From what you've put in your opening post, (a phone works in the socket but DSL does not), I have to ask, did you use a filter?

Ok, I had a look at the wiring on both the master socket and the extension I am trying to get working upstairs but really struggling to work out what is going on. I have included a few pictures to see if anyone can help. First one is the master socket at my front door. Its maybe worth mentioning the single socket that is fitted below the ADSL one behaves in the same way as the other 'slaves' throughout the house - works with a phone but not with bb. I am assuming this is feeding all the other sockets upstairs as there is a white cable running from this heading upwards inside the wall.
photo.jpg Next pic is the socket opened up. I'm assuming the thick black cable is the BT supply to the house. The solid blue and solid white wires seem to be going to the ADSL socket but its a different two feeding the socket below? Open socket.JPG ADSL Open.JPG Finally, this pic is the extension socket I cannot get my broadband working from. Thie wires are doubled up in here and run out again through another white cable so i'm assuming this is feeding the next socket in my next room. I'm maybe wrong but I recon if I can get the single socket next to the master wired correctly the rest of these should also work as it seems they are just wired from each other throughout the house?? Upstairs.JPG Again, if anyone can shed some light on this it would be appreciated. Thanks again. |

I would also check the cables on your master socket as well. Re strip / re sit the wires mate. if you have a tester then its a good idea to check the continuity of it as well as it could mean that the cable is damaged somewhere along the line. Make sure u use the correct tools to punch the cable into the socket.. Using any other tools will not work. |

First off, the lower socket seems redundant. Forget about it for the time being.
The filtered adsl face plates makes all other extensions filtered. However, they do allow for unfiltered connections. If you plug into the unfiltered ports, this should fix your problem but you will have to use filters everywhere else. Alternatively, use the redudant faceplate from the socket below. It is best to use the tool, but you can get away with using a fine screwdriver. So long as you press on the cable on either side of the metal connectors, you will be okay. Good luck PM also sent Last edited by abu baniaz; 01-02-11 at 09:53 PM. |
