Default Extra Hard Drive for my Inspiron 580

Hello to all,

I wish to add a second internal hard drive to my Dell Inspiron 580. But I am confused by the range on sale.

I have two questions and would appreciate any advice:

1 Are the internal hard drives normally supplied with any cables needed to connect them?

2 Any recommendations on what to buy. I want 1.5 gig minimum and relliability above all. I am looking at WD Caviar Green but have no idea if this is a wise choice or not.

Thanks very much

Michael

Normally, internal drives come without cables of any type, plus you need to be aware there are two types of interface available, Parallel ATA and SATA, though I suspect the 580 is a SATA drive. Why not go for an external hard drive, there are plenty available on the market. As for your minimum size, 1.5GB, are you sure you don't mean memory? since you won't find a hard disk under at least 40GB these days

Thanks for the reply.

I have external drives already and need to economise on USB ports (and yes I have a hub already too). The 580 is new and is definitely SATA

Of course I meant 1.5 terabytes not gig.

I think they come with a 500gig sata drive installed. If it is sata it will have a narrow red flat cable plugged into it.The computer will have a spare power plug, but you will need a sata cable for your new drive.

Sorry, m47 did'nt read post right. You know that it is sata

thanks, but if I buy a drive will it come with SATA connection cable or do I need to buy one separately as a pevious replier suggests? And does this provide power too? When I look at online sites like amazon they don't seem to say

Your computer will have spare power plugs.
You just need to buy a sata data cable.I get all my cables etc from amazon.I find them very good.
