Default Install XP from USB?

One of the kids has a pretty newish laptop with no optical drive.

She's slammed the laptop closed and broke the HD which has the restore partition on.

Bought a new HD but obv no OS on it.

Been reading around a few tuts on creating a bootable installation USB Flash drive.

Nowt seems to work.

Any pointers?

Which guides have you tried?
Try here:

I seem to remember something similar on the Microsoft website.

ok, so i've used a hybrid of the three tuts there and i can now make a bootable usb flash drive which i can install xp from.

from memory, if the drive is 2gb or less use FAT16 if its 2-4gb use NTFS. i had both but used the 2gb one. its actually a 2gb sd card in a usb dongle.

i used WinSetupFromUSB 0.2.3 to both format the drive and to put all the install files on it from a CDrom straight from the cd

now for the problem... the version of xp on the netbook is a ULCPC, which means Ultra Low Cost PC and i cant find a version of XP to match to download.

I have a licence from the sticker for a ULCPC version but if i remember rightly, the serial has to match the version of windows

You can try it and see if Windows will allow it. I ahve read cases where it will accept this type of key for the basic Windows XP, but not any of the advanced XP versions.
