lol, there's a lot more to it than that !

The chips used in the HD boxes tend to be a completely new generation where things are done significantly differently. Very often the processors have rather different architectures (a lot of them have multiple processor cores) so a whole new base firmware is needed to be built using a somewhat different skillset than was required on the old boxes.

Generally, the base firmware is bought in from the chipset manufacturer but its still a rather steep learning curve to move from the chipsets used in SD boxes to those used in HD.
