Wink Optical cable connection

Hi I have an LG37LD490 HD TV. I have also got a Network Blueray DVD Soundbar system which is a LG HLB54s Sound Bar.
I have connected up using the HDMI to the TV all is well good sound and vision.
What I would like to do is run the TV sound through the surrond sound.
I have connected an optical cable between the TV and the Sound Bar it shows it has optical setting but the sound is not coming through . There is a light from the end of the optical cable.
I have tried various options but to no avail. any ideas?
Thanks
