Just had an issue with my new HTC Desire HD showing "Limited service - emergency calls only".
It went like that yesterday when we went out to a countryside area of north Scotland I knew would be bad for reception. The message came up then, but never disappeared. Anyway, called up T-Mobile support just now and apparently sometimes a phone might have problems reconnecting to the mobile network. I'm not sure what the exact issue is, but it seems that sometimes when the phone cannot connect to a network for a valid reason, it just gets stuck in that mode. Solution: Remove the battery and SIM card, then replace both and switch the phone on. It then searches for the network anew, and should find it fine. Simple.

I've not seen a restart option on the device itself, but taking the SIM card out sounds like a relatively straight forward way to fix it.

it your not using the phone for internet you can switch it to 2g, i have a problem when making receiving calls and texts. sometimes it will say it has full bars but can not call or txt out or in. strange that im on t-mobile as well, your solution works but i can not be removing battery and sim every so often. the Iphone has a case that boosts the signal, hope something like that will happen for these phones
