If you don't mind a 10" screen, look at the Samsung netbooks at Ebuyer - 8 Hours battery life too

Just bought the wife a Dell Inspiron from Tesco, of all places, 4GB of RAM, 500GB harddisk, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, 15.6" display, all for £329

pretty good too, for the money.

i would buy something with a intel dual core inside it, as they run a lot quicker and smoother in my opinion, we x3 laptops in our house, one is a sony vaio with intel pentium dual core, the other is a dell with intel centrino dual core, and the last one is a asus with intel celeron, now the asus has more memory than the other 2 laptops but lacks the dual core and does not perform as good.

it might be worth holding back from buyin one for now if u can as the touch screen intergration seems to be moving over to laptops more, so u might get the best of both worlds of both physical keyboard and touch screen interaction, a bit like dells duo but hopefully with a bigger screen etc

Currys had the Acer Aspire 4820T for £380! It is fantastic for what you're getting really. It is similar in spec to this:
ACER Aspire TimelineX 4820T

except for the fact that it has 2GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. I'd go for the one online tbh, considering you're getting better value for money for the price you're paying but for a bricks and mortar store, that's a good price indeed.

I myself have an Acer Timeline 8371-942G25n from acerdirect (laptopsdirect/buyitdirect) It too has "up to 8 hours" of battery, and I get around 5 hours or so
