Default edit time limit.

I am sure that I am not the only finds the 20 minute edit time limit a bit short.
I often revisit replys after a few minutes.and add a few dots or commers.or generaly tidy it up a bit.For instance I have just spent a few minutes editing a post( trying to correct an error)I started within the 20 minutes but when I tried to save it I was told timeout. If the site lets me start the edit surely It should let me finish.

Just nit pickin .Brian.
A little bit of post clockin.

Getting to a 1000 posts is on my bucket list.He HE.

Must admit I tend to do the same as I occasionally make fairly lengthy posts so i'd quite like to see a longer edit period to be able to make corrections. Mind, I can also see why they are kept quite short, especially in contentious threads.

Originally the edit period was indefinite or at least quite long I think. But it was reduced after a certain individual a while back got the huff and went over his posts and edited out the contents so that they were of no use any more.

How long a period would you like?

Brian may be willing to extend it a little.

Something like 24 hours would be nice I think. That way, you could review last nights 'late night' posts and make the necessary corrections the next day.

The trouble with leaving it too long is that people can and do make quite major revisions of their posts, even with the 20 min limit. It's certainly been seen on the football threads where someone would post something abusive, and then before the 20 mins were up, edit it to something normal. By which time someone has already replied in a huff, a fight has broken out, but the originator comes up smelling of roses.

Better to keep it relatively short.

The limit only applies from after you've posted, not composing, so 20 minutes is quite a long time to spell check as needs be.

I can see the point though with not being able to go back and edit your posts for genuine reasons though brian. It is only some elements that wish to do as you say. And besides, we can see their previous edits so can see who the trouble makers were.

What about if there was an additional membership category, that we could let members into with a longer edit period?

If someone desperately requires a post to be edited, for genuine reasons, they can use the report option and ask a mod to do it, or PM a mod.

I have known a couple of members, who have got into an argument, or received an infraction, over reacted and wanted to cancel their membership and have all their posts removed, by the next day they have calmed down, but if the edit option was left open they could alter all their posts making some threads unreadable.

I can see things from your point of view but at the same time with technical type posts its often not until the next day that glaring errors become apparent.

I for one have a problem that my brain works somewhat faster than I can type which often leads to my fingers missing whole paragraphs of what the brain has composed. Sometimes I dont see the errors even when reading back because the brain see's what it thinks should be there rather than what actually is. Its often not until the next day that the errors become apparent.

Yes, there are mods that can do the corrections but, if i'm honest, thats just too much of a hassle.

Dunno if its possible to maybe increase the edit time in certain sections only, ie those where your more likely to get more technical type posts, whilst leaving it unchanged in certain other places.

I'm certainly open to suggestions - extending it from 20 mins to 30 mins, or possibly allowing members with more than x posts to have an even more extended period (perhaps 24 hours).

I have to admit, I do have reservations with extending it too much - I've seen editing abused too much in the past on forums in general. And even in normal use, once someone has replied to a post, any editing of previous replies can endanger the thread becoming nonsensical.

I think it should be based more on personality than postcount.
