Default Noob Questions (Sorry!)

Hi all,

I'm new to all this and don't really understand how these things work. I've searched but cant really find the specific answers I'm looking for.

I've just moved into a basement flat and the signal from the shared aerial is terrible. I have a virgin media connection point but I'm only going to be here for 6 months and they don't do contracts for less than 12 months and when I move I probably wont want vm.

If i buy a starview 7, how does it work? will I be able to get any channels through the vm cable? If i got premium channels it would be a bonus, but would just be happy knowing I can get freeview channels for 6 months.

I have broadband but i have a 15gb allowance, I've read about boxes being connected but do they have to be all the time and do they stream channels at all?

I know there's lots of posts there, but there's so many that just say do your reading, and its not really helpful at all. I'm managing to get little bits of information but I'm so far through the forum that I don't know if it's still relevant.

I've got a bit more understanding since my post, would really appreciate it if someone could clarify whether I'm right or not.

The starview box has to be connected to the internet and a virgin media cable all the time. The cable doesn't have to have an active subscription to work. I will get premium channels while the servers are working.

What I can't find the anser to is whether or not I will I get freeview channels regardless, even if the servers go down forever like seems to be a concern at the moment?

your starview box uses less than 1mb a day and your virgin media connection must be active

to sum up
you need a live cable feed and box must be connected to internet to view premium channels
as already stated internet usage is very small

you will not get freeview when not connected, all you will get is FTA (free to air) channels

So just to summarise,

An active VM connection is needed to receive any channels.

The best way to guarantee this is to have a sub, but sometimes connections without a sub work.
If I'm not online I will receive free to air channels only.

I now understand it all works through card sharing and that's why signals might be lost.
