Default Trying to connect a new D-Link router to the internet

I am trying to connect a new D-Link router to the internet. I have tried to install the router at my dynamic ip address as I am broadband cable. When the set up is looking for internet connections it tells me it has a problem when trying to access the internet, please check your DSL/Cable connection and verify your internet connection settings. I have disconnected the modem numerous times and reconnected but to no avail and also tried different channels and security. I access the internet with no problem when not using the router.

If you can access the net when your new router is NOT connected this means you have another router on your network - you're not using both at the same time are you cos you can't do this. You can only use 1 router at any time on a network - the other would have to be setup up as an access point only. The reason for this is that they would both be trying to control your network for IP addresses, etc. The other reason (if your not using both at the same time) is that your old router may be giving out an IP that your new router can't work with. What OS you using?

Remember that VM effectively pair a modem to a single MAC so your modem will be 'paired' to whatever device it was previously connected to. To force a new 'pair' you must power down your modem for at least 30 seconds. If you try to connect the modem to a new device without this reset then you will not be allocated a usable internet IP address.

Alternatively, you can 'clone' the MAC address of your old router (or PC if you weren't using a router previously) into the new router. This will allow you to keep the same semi-static IP address that you had previously on VM's system.

In the actual router, you must make sure that the connection type is dynamic IP (DHCP) with (if you have the option) MTU set to 1500. On the LAN setup you must also make sure that DHCP server is enabled and your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

On the PC, make sure your Internet protocol properties are set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. In XP these settings can be found in Start>settings>Network Connection>"Name of your network card" and then selecting Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and pressing the properties button.
