my best find was a gin trap which was still set. it had rusted together so i didnt get my hand cut off when i dug it up.

used to go after cash after the traveling fair had been in town and on the beaches after a nice weekend. anywhere where people could drop cash... and watches.. and anything really.

is that bracelet silver?

I bought a detector 5 years ago used it once and not since as not sure where to use it. We do have a field and woods at the back of of us so might give it another go

Great Thread Martin, love the idea of metal detecting, i haven't tried metal detecting before but have always fancied giving it a go. would love to see how this thread goes with realistic posts, and might fancy a go myself...jay

you would need to get permission to go on any land it can be very hard work getting permission all land as history of some sort, i have been lucky/cheeky getting land, but i also have spent hours studying areas to target for the better older nicer stuff, one of my favourite coin up to date

Looks a good coin, do you know what it is, ie history / value etc.

Talking Re: metal detecting

ive always wanted to try it aswell, but just would not no where to search by me, knowing my luck i would stumble across a old WW2 bomb and blow myself up un-earthing it lol

but worse than that i would start by going over my garden and end up digging it all up by every buzz of the detector i heard

just wondering martin how far down does the stuff u find normally be is it near the surface or do u end up digging out a trench for yourself

The depth depends on the strength of the detector.. I went to a small rural town in America in Wisconsin for a few weeks and my friend bought a little metal detector in a town and used it next to our hotel and in the fields and stuff like that. I think it only went down as far as a meter or so... picked up some very interesting things.. mostly junk though, like old cans and signs, it was still interesting.

The photos you shared of your finds are great, by the way. Very cool thread!
