Default Win7 updates crash laptop

Hi a friend has just bought his son a Dell laptop, it is a Inspiron 1545, it has Win 7 install, and reinstalled, by me, several times. It keep going to blue screen when updates was turned on, I have since turned auto updates of and it is now stable. I have run Malwarebites and it has found nothing at all. Has anyone come across this before and if so is there any work around this?

I did have trouble getting SP1 to install on my own laptop, but did manage to get it to install in the end, but this is completely different. I have run all the tests for the boot sector also, just to be sure there was nothing there. I am at a loss as to what might be causing this to happen. I even installed Win7 from my own disk, but like the Dell version it kept going to blue screen whilst Windows was updating. I do hope someone will be able to help me out with this one as I am lost. Any help will be very welcome and appreciated.

Regards Wez

Not sure mate, just got the lappy yesterday, I suppose it would be well worth a try. I have just discovered something on the HDD which might be affecting it also, it is not on my Acer with Win 7. There is a partition which says system reserved, it is 99.9 mb and has a file in it called $UpgDrv$, I clicked on it but it does nothing, by the sounds of the name it is sonething to do with driver update. I shall have a look and see what needs to be installed from Dell. Many thanks for your reply and help, this keyboard layout is different to me so please forgive any typos.

Best regards Wez

Thanks, I think I may have found a solution, I found an updated bios driver on the Dell download site and installed it, it is not trying to install Win 7 SP1, I had to go and troubleshoot windows update, it fixed two errors in it and now seems to be installing SP1, hope so anyway as my friend was adamant that it was installed on the lappy.I have been working with this lappy since yesterday and it is beginning to be a bit of a pain. It is a very nice lappy and my mate's son needs it for his new school, next year, he is going to secondary and they do not use boos much most of his work will be done on it, even homework, which is then e-mailed to his teacher.

Best regards and many thanks to you both Wez
