Default SB5100 serial port

I've added an internal serial port to my SB5100 and so far I've not managed to get any output from it.

I've tried switching the TX and RX lines but that hasn't worked, all solder joints look good. Do I need to flash the noisy bootloader before I get any output? I thought the noisy bootloaders were only required if you wanted to flash via serial?
