Newbie question!
![]() I've had a search around here and have found lots of almost-answers to my question but none that are spot-on. I have a wireless router connected to my phone line for ADSL internet. It was supplied by my internet provider and it's rubbish (drops connections, poor range etc.) I've just picked up an additional router (linksys WRT610N) on e-bay. I need to keep using my original router to give me the ADSL connection (the linksys has no connection for a phone line), but I want the linksys to do all the routing of traffic and use the original router as a modem. I may in future want to turn the original router's radio back on to extend the wireless network range, but that's a question for another day. Using the linksys web interface, I've changed its IP address to 192.168.1.11 and set it's DHCP server to issue addresses from 192.168.1.12 onwards. I've connected the 'internet' ethernet port on the linksys to ethernet port 1 on the original router. I've left the original router's default IP address at 192.168.1.1 and set it to provide the linksys with a static IP of 192.168.1.11. I can now get the linksys web interface at 192.168.1.11 but there is no internet access. I'm guessing the next step would be to turn off the DHCP server on the original router completely but I'm nervous because I tried a similar thing on another router a few years back and ended up not being able to connect to it at all (and therefore couldn't undo the damage I'd done). I'm also confused as to why it's not working already so I don't want to blunder on until I'm sure. Can anyone here give me some advice? Thanks, John. |

not sure if its available on that particular model but you want to set the lynksys as an access point.
i'd leave the adsl/router to do the routing. if its connected via a ethernet it shouldnt drop connection. you can get a adsl router/modem combo and use it with your existing line. you need to go through the webgui of your existing one and write down all the info such as usernames and passwords. if any of the passwords are *'d out, google "snadboy revelation"

oh, you'd not use the internet port on the linksys, use one of the lan ports

Thanks for the suggestion.I'll do as you suggest if there's no other way, however one of the reasons I got the linksys model is because of the good reviews it has as a router (e.g.Conclusion : Wireless Networking: Nine 802.11n Routers Rounded Up): I'd be sad to have to use it only as an access point. |

Hi John,
I work in the IT industry here in Australia. I'm unfamiliar with the particular product in question and I have to go out so I won't be able to research the specifics of it until later today. But I'll try to be of some assistance to you. We setup routers for home users all the time. If the Linksys is a router, then it will have an 'internet' port or sometimes it's called a WAN port (wide area network). Generally, we would leave DHCP on the modem on with an address range of 192.168.1.0 for example. On the router, we would leave the WAN port as picking up its address from the modem dynamically, that is, let the modem decide what address to give it within the range you specify. We would then set a different address range for the LAN ports on the router, say 192.168.2.0. The idea of a router is that the WAN port is a different address range to your LAN ports, this is some protection to your devices on the LAN. Thats a very brief run down of what we do and it works. I don't think I have seen a setup work the way your trying to do and thats a whole other discussion on why. I will be back later on to answer any more question, so don't feel I've abbandoned you if you dont hear from me in the next half day or so. I'll check in to see how your going. Kindest regards, Mike B |
