I have got the 20meg Broadband from VM with their standard wireless modem. We currently have the two PC's upstairs plugged into the wireless modem via ethernet cable. I want to move the kids PC downstairs and be buy an adapter or something that will pick up the wireless modem upstairs. In the past I purchased a dongle which was rubbish as the signal strength was really poor so want something that I can pluginto the PC that will pick up the modem good.

A pci wifi card is your answer.. So long as your PC case is a standard tower/desktop form size and not a small form factor unit, something as cheap as this will do the job nicely..
Wireless G PCI Adaptor Or if you really want to ensure signal strength is never cause for a problem, how about using a cheap and cheerful Powerline Ethernet Adaptor instead of wifi .. 85Mbps Powerline Adaptor Both options are insanely cheap, but will be ideal for you.. |

My experience suggests you go for that powerline adapter - the wireless is never guaranteed, and you don't say how much you tested out the dongle (in particular, what range of locations).
My brother-in-law ended up with a wired connection, having had all sorts of problems with staying connected using an add-on to his desktop PC.

One of the Powerline adaptor connects to your modem/router via an Ethernet cable.. Then the other Powerline adaptor will connect to a PC via Ethernet cable..
