As I am sure some of you are aware it was St Georges day yesterday (the patron saint of England). I decided to celebrate by going for a drink in a traditional English local pub with a pint of traditional english ale and listen to some live music.
I got to the pub only to find that the live music was cancelled this week but it will be back on next week. Then I found that 2 out of the 3 English ales were off. I did not see a single george cross apart from the one on my T-shirt, and one on th hat of my DUTCH mate! I was thoroughly disappointed. In contrast I happened to be out on St Patriks day (the patron saint of Ireland) a few months ago, and 3 out of the 5 pubs in my village had live music. All of them had a discount on Guiness. Eveywhere you looked there were shamrock decorations and people wearing silly hats etc etc. What is wrong with this country that we celebrate another countries national day but not our own? I am proud to be English - not British English! Why does no-one else feal this way?

Is it perhaps because they feel disassociated with St George? I mean St Patrick was Irish, St David was Welsh, (not sure about the Scots St Andrew)But St George was from what is now Turkey, and it seems never even visited Britain.
Perhaps there'd be more enthusiasm if a more local and modern Saint were adopted?Who knows. ![]() Regards Cat |
