Question Recording using a dongle

Hi,

I have one of these digital TV tuner dongles:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FREEVIEW-DIGIT...43500413214456

It picks up freeview channels if I plug in a standard TV arial.

If I connect the arial output from my satellite receiver to the dongle input, do you think it would pick up the satellite channels?

Thanks.

If it has an analogue tuner, then yes, if not, then no.

Hi,

How do I determine if it has an analogue tuner?

It comes with a program (BlazeVideo HDTV Player) which has a "Scan Channels" button.

Thanks.

You would be able to receive the analogue TV channels with it. If your area is pre-DSO * then you can check which channels carry the the analogue channels here:-
http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/

Enter your postcode etc, tick that you are in the aerial installation trade, and you will get a list of channels for digital and analogue for the transmitter that your aerial is aligned to.

If your area has already switched, then you'll have to make a note of which channel your sat receiver modulates onto and try picking it up.

I suspect that your unit is digital only, but don't know TBH, as never used a device of this type.

*= Digital Switch Over.

Hi,

We have switched over here.

What is the cheapest way of recording from a satellite dish (barring VHS)?

By getting a receiver that is PVR ready, usually via a USB port, to which a USB HDD can be connected.

An example is the Technomate TM5200, and also the Icecrypt S1500C, but there are many other models that include that functionality. Should set you back no more than £100 approx, including a 300 gig odd HDD.
