Try This..

Go to Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, open Computer Management, open Storage and open Disk Management. Check to see if the partition is marked as Active? If it is not, click once to highlight it, right click and select Mark partition as Active. Reboot your PC and try the Recovery procedure again...

If the above does not work then download a copy of Vista from Torrents and insert keys from bottom of laptop and install drivers from HP Website..

refitted and booted up, laptop went to recovery mode.
All seemed great but now in getting messeage " This copy of windows is not genuine "
Used activation box and stated activation sucessful,
I have been downloading MS updates most of the night, surley if not genuine I would not be able to do this

If you have activated the keys and is coming up as successful then you should get all updates as you have activated the keys..

Did you use the keys under laptop?

Google a file called "RemoveWAT.sfx.exe" that will remove windows not geniune message and activate the copy for you.. I have tried the one for windows 7 and it works fine..
