Not a thing m8 could be a faulty cable or faulty electrical connection.

If your signal levels are already low then, yes, putting a KV (or any other device) on the same feed may affect the modem. Generally just placing a splitter into the cable somewhere will reduce the signal levels to each device by 3-4dB. Once the devices are connected you will likely suffer another dB or so of drop.

Check you modem status pages for signal levels. For the downstream you should ideally be getting 0dBmV (between -5dBmV to +5dBmV is usually acceptable). For upstream you should be getting less than 55dBmV but below 48dBmV is more ideal.

Also check the modem status log and see if there are any errors. T3/T4 errors can inicate an underlying problem somewhere.

Also if you have split the feed coming from the isolator with one going to the modem and the other going to the KV then this is usually what most people do and the majority have no or very little problems at all, however what people dont consider is the devices will not have any isolation from each other, so this setup has been known to cause problems. Mainly the modem intermittently losing connectivity with the network. The perfect setup is the splitter to be fitted before the isolator and individual isolators fitted at each point required.

for the last 10 days i have been coming home from work and having to reboot modem myself before it will work..

checked cables and all fine. signal levels on modem and KV all seem fine and conform with the levels Coder pointed out.

not sure what the problem is to be honest - i reboot and all working fine.

An isolator is what VM fit between the network and domestic cabling, its purpose is to protect your equipment from possible dangerous voltages coming through from their network or vice versa from your side. It will usually be found inside the white box they fit on your wall (normally at point of entry) and most VM guy's will sell you one for a couple of quid so don't be afraid to ask one. I'm not saying that this is definitely what your problem is, but it certainly is another possibility and even if it doesn't fix this particular problem at least you will know you have the proper set up in place.

The more arrestors / breaks you put in place the more dB loss .. .. isolator 3dB, then splitter 3dB and that's assuming you only have your line split once, then counting the splitter in the ETB that's another 3dB a total of 9dB so your cab levels should be set on a ' high tap bank ' to compensate for the 9dB.

The proper way to do it is to check the signal levels at each point, cab, ETB, arrestor, splitter.

But try it - see if it helps you can always take it out of the circuit if it has negative affects.
