Seems kind of creepy how I just removed loads of tracking cookies all related to Virgin Media - This after news regarding Virgin Media have quote "Working in conjunction with SOCA (the Serious Organised Crime Agency), Virgin has been monitoring security and has now warned some 1,500 users across the UK that they’ve been infected with the SpyEye trojan."
LOL Serious Organized Crime Squad needed to solve Spyware Issues? Yeahhh Right lol Ironically those that have, have just gave whoever is running the server their MAC address, which therefore allows them to recognize subscriptions that are within 12 month date, or are outside an old 12 Month Date. Either way, you are being watched, it's up to you to decide who by

Carry on and laugh :-) Think of all those who lack technical knowledge who fail to even begin to comprehend what that News Report as posted on this website would allow Virgin Media to do to those using their BB Internet Services.
I ran my box for 2 years successfully through a Virgin Media BB Connection without bothering to Steal someone elses MAC Address. Am I silly doing that? Or do you know more then me as to how safe it actually is, without Virgin Media obtaining information through deception. The first thing their Spyware software check for is probably website history that traces back to websites like this, never mind trying to find viruses. Now you are asked to provide a member of "Starview" your MAC Address in order to get the box working again, which just so happens to allow them to record every single users IP Address aswell as MAC Address to hand over to in exchange for a less severe punishment, after the same individuals requesting the information, were part of the same ones that originally got busted and 2 were detained. Do I have proof to back up my statement? No, but then again, I'm not stating that it's the case, I am just not as thick as to now try to get a service for free through insecure methods using unencrypted \ change of hardware like I have done for the last 2 years without issues. Rather then put "PSML" Try to be a little more constructive in helping others to prove what I actually say is not actually possible, regardless of how ridiculous and far fetched you think it sounds. PS : Oh and by the way, before it's mentioned that the reason you are required to give you MAC Address, is to allow them to identify those who still have time on their 12 Months Subs is aload of bollocks. If you want to try and put the blame on to people like myself for the reason as to why they made such changes then tough ****, I received as much downtime as anyone else has experienced and did not get support for as promised like most are at the time. Then again, I am not about to moan out of the extra 1+ Year service I gained through simply googling for the firmware, and I'm sure I am not the only one who has managed to avoid paying for boxes since Starview 4, where although it did not have ethernet, it had USB inputs which could be turned into Ethernet Inputs via 99p Adapter Convertes for the £1 shop. So yes, I am quite happy to say that I am done with my box, it's had it use, and now I would happily pay £25 for another one that can be modified to work through ethernet, and use a different MAC address this time round. If the actually wanted to snoop then technically they can simply 'sniff' your data as it passes through their system (although this would be illegal, but probably less so than infecting customers machines with Spyware and virii). |

[QUOTE=TheCoder;593665]VM could get this info without having to resort to spyware. They are your ISP - they can see exactly who you are connecting to anytime they choose and are, in fact, obliged to keep connection data for two years for legal reasons. Same with all other UK ISP's !
Yes, what you say is very much true, however, the amount of data transmitted from the SV Box down a broadband line is something that would take forever to even begin to work out what the data being sent actually is (that's without using a nicked MAC address). Even then, it would mean that VM employed tons of staff to actually deal with the monitoring process of packet sniffing, which I doubt VM are willing to spend money on, just to find it's on a dodgy MAC address where no one can be located at the end of it all. This is why they will always opt in targeting those running the server, as its cheaper and all they do is sue those individuals who are behind the operation of it all, based on the estimated loss of subs caused by those responsible for running the server. If VM could find out who were running boxes that easily, then why do they have to resort to putting fake notices on channels that have been moved about which are there to try and freak out those unfamiliar with such tactics VM use to try and deter against using the boxes? What I was originally saying with regards to using VM based Virus Scanning Software is that anyone using VM Broadband to obtain a signal to their SV Box, who download and use VM's "Anti-Virus" software could be more then a good way to cover up what data it is actually trying to send back. It's not been the first time that VM have applied dodgy tactics to rip customers off in the past. Take what they did with landlines for a while which rang off after anyone got chance to actually answer the call, as it was automatically diverted to voice mail by default if the phone was not answered within 3 rings, and look how much it cost to actually retrieve those missed messages. VM have always run scams across their customers, so I would not for one minute doubt that they would keep above board when it comes to business. Last edited by mixtrixx2011; 22-06-11 at 11:18 AM. |
