99% of the time it is the PSU, unfortunately when it's not then you have to check all the components, including graphics, motherboard, and CPU, usually by testing them in another set up.
If you know anyone with the same type of motherboard you can try testing your CPU in their PC, or get hold of a cheap replacement motherboard, try a local PC repair shop, if you have any in your area, they might be throwing some old stuff away. |

Hi. Thanks for all your advice and help you have been posting to kev1911. Just registered here yesterday! I might have the chance of a computer that is no longer in use by another friend of mine. If I get it I'm hoping to use the my other friend's hard drive in it, he's the friend who you have been trying to sort out a problem for me. All depends on whether or not it has a SATA connection(s). I have a PATA hard drive myself that I used to have installed that has XP on it so I could fit that and see if it works ok with my friend's monitor, mouse and keyboard. Can't see any reason why it wouldn't?
I'll let you know how it all works out if I get the computer! lesmar47 |

Hi! Thanks for the information regarding SATA and PATA HD connections. I actually acquired two computers yesterday! I pulled two of the memory sticks out of one of them and put them into my friend's computer removing his own first and it worked! Had it running for four hours. I decided to upgrade his memory by inserting his own memory as well and he ended up with 1gb of RAM. He had no sound and I couldn't fix that. The computer was a lot faster after that. I then proceeded to download any Windows updates, finding quite a few and each time the computer restarted with no problems. I eventually shut the computer down as it was getting late and tried starting for one final time and nothing! Back to square one now, but I'm going to use one of the mother boards from one of the other two computers and the hard drive that has XP installed on it as well. I may do a reinstall of XP on the drive as there is a lot of stuff on it my friend won't want. Wonder why his computer wouldn't start after running, restarting and being ok for over four hours? Really driving me mad to say the least! If you have any ideas please share them with me! Thanks.

When you state wouldn't restart do you mean that there is absolutely no power getting through or do you mean it wouldn't boot up?
Check the cable from the switch to the motherboard it might be loose. If it's booting to the memory check try removing the memory you added. |

Hi. I powered down the computer the normal way after it had been on for four hours or so with no problems and then I pressed the power button to see if it would boot up ok. Although it sounded as though all was ok, (the fans, motherboard light and the cd drive were normal) the system wouldn't boot up. Frustrating to say the least. I'm back to square one, but I do have two computers I can use some parts from, I just have to take my time in selecting the compatible components. One HD has XP on it already, but was previously owned by a Pastor friend of mine which had a lot of stuff on it to do with the church, so that will have to be wiped off. I have another HD of my own which has XP on it as well, but when I last had it in my computer as a back up drive, it wouldn't boot up, so I'll have to see it if does the same should I decide to use that. Life's interesting isn't it? LOL! Thanks for all your help. |

Judging from what you have said.. I would say that Mickha was right the first time and you consider changing your PSU as it seems like that is the problem. Also check at the back of the PSU to see that the Fan inside is spinning correctly.
