Surely not the null cable?
It's transfer .. .. are the COM ports enabled and functioning in your O/S, and is your null modem cable actually a null modem cable, you won't be the first to make the mistake, a serial [ RS232 ] cable and a null modem cable are identical other than the pinout

Take it round a mates with an old PC, preferably a WinXP setup and it will work, if it doesn't the cable is not ' null ' or the cable is fubared.

Where did you get the cable did it come with the box from the supplier ?

That's not what I said my friend, I said PC, worryingly .. .. if the cable came with the box, it should be a gud~n.

Many lappies have the COM port turned off at BIOS level [ particularly with the Radeon Mobile GPU ] to enable ' hot switching ' of the on board video for TV use. This is not the case with older PC's with a proper video card .. .. COM port is hardly ever turned off because they don't need the macro to run ' hot switching '.

Look in Control Panel / Device Manager / Hardware / and check to see if the COM port has a yellow asterisk to signify its disabled.
