Default 3rd party firmaware for routers

I have had just about enough with the firmware on my WRT54Gv6. I m considering putting a 3rd party project on the router but I need a few questions answered first:

Does putting a new firmware on PREMANENTLY kill my warranty? Or can I simply put the proper firmware back on if I want it replaced?

What 3rd party firmware is the best outthere? I am specifically looking or the best range boosting one (free ones that is)

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

You would have to talk to Linksys about your warranty but the Linksys WRT54Gv6 has a vxworks based firmware so needs preparation before flashing, please read about your version in the link
